Non-Profit Accountant
Overview
Reporting to the CFO and in collaboration with the Controller, the Accountant is responsible for the full cycle accounting for two not-for-profit companies within our organization. The Accountant will manage the day to day activities within the department as well as analyzing and preparing reporting to the Core Team on the financial position for the International Association of Tao and Love Peace Harmony Foundation.
Responsibilities
- Achieves accounts payable, disbursements, and vendor payments on a weekly basis.
- Liaise with the Warehouse teams to manage inventory
- Prepares monthly journal entries to record purchase of sales of investment portfolio assets and any related gain or loss
- Complete bank reconciliations
- Prepares accruals and pre-paid transactions
- Manages monthly closing of the financial reports and posting of the month-end information to ensure accuracy of financial statements
- Liaise with the management teams on budgets and forecasts
- Prepares reports on variances of budgets and recommend corrective actions
- Completion of all month-end and annual submissions such as GST/HST, State Taxes, Income Tax, Payroll Taxes, and Insurances.
- Liaise with the CFO on Not-for-Profit Status in Canada and setup on new Charity
- Ensure all policies and procedures are adhered to
- Identify and implement improvements in the area of performance reporting
Skills, Knowledge, Abilities
- Bachelor’s Degree in Finance/Accounting
- Enrolled in a CMA/CGA program
- 3 – 5 years Proven non-profit accounting/finance experience
- Experience in budgeting, forecasting, and monthly financial reporting
- Strong analytical skills along with a solid understanding of accounting theories and tax implications for Canada and the US
- Strong understanding of Accounting Standards for Not-for-Profit organizations
- Strong experience working with major accounting software – SAP B1 or SAP Hana would be an asset
- Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Excel is required
- Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with all levels of employees
- Ability to work in a self-directed manner, proactive and ability to work well in a team setting
- Experience managing an accounting team would be considered an asset
